About the Film
Ruby explores adoption, motherhood, silence, and belonging through the emotional world of an 11-year-old girl.
Synopsis
Eleven-year-old Amber becomes fixated on the idea of a birth mother she knows almost nothing about. As fragments of the past begin to surface, she withdraws into herself, drifting between imagination and reality. At home, the quiet tension with her adoptive parents deepens, while her inner world grows increasingly vivid. Caught between absence and presence, Amber must navigate an emotional space where love, distance, and belonging begin to blur.
Is family something we are given, or something we choose?
Director's Statement
This film began with two friends whose adoption experiences could not have been more different. Their stories raised questions about belonging, truth, parenthood, and the emotional silence that can shape a child's identity. Ruby does not offer easy answers, but holds onto the possibility of connection, staying with Amber at the moment everything begins to shift — where uncertainty remains, but so does hope.
